We chat a lot on Yahoo and similar IM’s and can they be taken as evidence in the court of law ? If yes, how far they are valid ?

if someone complaints against your chat to police they trace your ip address and also thee ip address in which chat is sent ,if both are same,then it is valid,if not it is not valid
