Video Sharing Technology For Two or More Mobile Phones

Summary

Research and Development towards Long Term Evolution, has contributed to features that made it outwit previous technologies. This has prompted me to suggest a new feature for mobile telecommunications: video sharing.

Video sharing is related to video call just that this feature will enable saved videos to be viewed by two or more mobile phones users at the same time. So a friend can play a song or a video on his phone and enable another friend using a wap-enabled phone to view, without permanent transfer of data.

The usefulness of this technology cannot be overemphasized since it will benefit statistically proven ‘pair’ of phone users which are lovers and will also boost business, site seeing and forensic investigative work. This proposed technology is not just for 4G phones; so long a phone can make data calls and install the required software it can be used for this technology.

When one thinks of already available video conferencing and video call, one might see this proposed video sharing technology as similar; in this Information Age, every feature matters especially when it’s slightly different from what is available. When this feature is finally made, much more relevance will be discovered from its use.

Purpose

The basic purpose of having this technology is to enable mobile phone users share multimedia files stored on their phone with other users.

This will be used for business, broadcasting, reference, belated presentation, forensic investigative work and so on. Lovers could also share a love video or a love song before/after a call.

This feature will be a telltale of future technologies. This is different from video call, since a call will not be in place between both parties while viewing and the video will not be showing the caller & recipient.

This will also be used to share pictures if both phones have similar picture viewer. The initiator and recipient will view the slide show simultaneously, expanding options of video (multimedia) sharing.

Pathway

Related technology previously used to achieve video call will be used here; only that video shared in this case are videos stored on the phone. This initiator will invite the receiver to view, when the receiver accepts, they watch the video together on their mobile phones from anywhere in the world. To view video, by initiating or receiving, the phone must install an application for this technology using the internet as the medium for installation and usage.

This will be related to 3G-324M technology or the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) for video telephony. Study shows that SIP have higher advantage to carry this out. Research into interoperability and juxtaposition of both technologies will enable this video sharing feature and make it available through 4th Generation telecommunication technology.

Analysis

3G-324M

The 3G-324M operates over an established circuit switched connection between two communication peers, enabling conversational multimedia communication over Circuited Switched Networks.

This technology features, shows that one could share multimedia files using the Voice over Internet Protocol feature of this service.

A simple challenge to the 3G-324 based IP videoconferencings remains internet subscription; it however remains a feasible technology to make the proposed video sharing possible.

The 3G-324 specification using the Circuit switched network allows delay sensitive conversational multimedia services. 3G-324M operating over a circuit switched channel between two communication peers guarantees the fixed delay quality of service for multimedia communication.

Already existing features of 3G-324 shows that little adjustment will make it possible to have this proposed video sharing. Internet-operated software installed will operate like multimedia messaging service; where the sender selects file to share and recipient(s).

The recipient on acceptance will start viewing the video immediately or later as specified. The software will be an element of Computer Supported Cooperative Work.

Session Initiation Protocol (SIP)

This is a signaling protocol used for controlling multimedia communication sessions such as voice and video calls over the Internet. This is a protocol that can be used for the proposed stored multimedia file sharing.

Collaborative software designed for this can have video sharing for either two-party or multiparty sessions. The software will have functions like ‘view’ time after invitation is accepted; acceptance/rejection notification; kind of file to be shared: pictures, music/video; number of phones to be shared with: single or multi; mode of sharing: play list/Slide Show; etc.

The software will be useable with many of the available telecommunication technologies such as the UMTS, Wi-Fi, EDGE GSM, CDMA etc.

Combining Circuit switched 3G-324M services with packet-based SIP services can leverage the strength of both networks to enable new types of differentiated and innovative video-sharing service.

What this technology does is that it takes data from the sender’s phone and puts it on the internet; making it an internet data so by view time it will be viewed by the both parties as a data from the internet. More than one video can be listed for view just that the first one will be viewed while others queue up for view.

Significance

This is a responsive technology, since the receiver holds the right to reject to replay the video. Phone call using same phone need not hold between both parties while viewing, this should be before/after viewing. The advantage of this is having two/multiparty share stored-multimedia without having a conversation. Key significance of the technology is highlighted below:

> This technology will enable video sharing without necessarily having an ongoing conversation; this will save airtime, cut cost in some respect and avoid unnecessary transfer of files.

> It will extend the use of video technology in telemedicine, Surveillance, entertainment services, forensic investigation, video on-demand, etc by storing the data first, then requesting to view with someone else any other time.

> The phones in use will not necessarily be 4G phones, if it is wap enabled and has multimedia capabilities it can be used.

Notes

To extend flexibility, utility and service, a file can be stored and requested to be shared at some other time. For example, a video can be requested to be shared; the recipient sets a time to view it, the initiator accepts, when the time comes, the recipient may decide to further postpone it; finally when the receiver views the file, the initiator will be notified but may or may not be viewed together then.

The video sharing software in the recipient phone can pile up multimedia files to be viewed later since these files are internet files not stored on his phone, to view the software connects to the internet and the video plays.

A list of videos, music and pictures can be in place to be viewed, they may follow same pattern as arranged in the gallery of the initiators phone or arranged as the receiver wants it. The technology will also enable the sender to share the video with one or more persons.

This technology will be easily applicable for phones of the same manufacturers where chat applications are used. Users can share a multimedia file and view together; else the software will be used for view any other time. When a call comes in during view, the recipient may continue to view while the sender lags behind when the call is dropped.

This application can be developed by third parties and can also be developed by manufacturers; desired result will be obtained as described and predicted here. Third party organization may have it strictly on applications, rather than application and chat room by phone manufacturers

The term can thus mean any technology ranging from realtime online chat over instant messaging and online forums to fully immersive graphical social environments. People also usually use slang in chat rooms, this is called text talk. e.g. Lol Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Tennoe, Mariam T./ Henssonow, Susan F.
